GAME CHANGER FOR NKHANDE COMMUNITY DAY SECONDARY SCHOOL

Computers in schools is not news in Scotland. But in Malawi, this is a game changer. When we heard in November 2024 about the organisation, Computers for Enhanced Education Malawi, which offers refurbished pc computers for free, with a five year maintenance contract, we knew we had to act quickly to get Nkhande Secondary School in on the act. The Headteacher and the Chair of the School Board were enthusiastic, as was the computer teacher who was already on the staff. The KMG Committee quickly agreed to finance the necessary upgrade to the library building and sent out funds.By the beginning of 2025, a welder was fabricating grills for enhanced security of the Library at the school, and an electrician had installed the cable to take power to the Library. So when a new consignment of computers arrived at the Blantyre office of CEEMW from the Turing Trust based in Edinburgh, the school was ready to receive them. Dr Kondwani Chidziwisano, Chair of the School Board, submitted the application and 21 computers were quickly reserved for Nkhande School. He also bought extension cables and surge protectors with funds sent out from Killearn. There was great excitement at the school when the computers were delivered at the beginning of May 2025. Within a week, classes had started, ensuring that every student at the school had introductory lessons to familiarise them with computers, and lower classes starting computer courses. The school does not have access to the internet, as the costs are very high, but the computers are uploaded with Malawi curriculum materials. One computer was donated to the neighbouring primary school for use by the staff, so that they felt part of the scheme.
